Tuesday and Wednesday of this week I have the great opportunity of teaching a group of church planters who are participating in a training program through the Houston Church Planters Network. They are in a residency which carries them through a training process before they are sent to various locations around Houston to begin new churches. It is a blessing for us at Crossings Community to participate with this program financially, prayerfully, and in training.
As I have thought about sharing with them this week it has caused me to reflect on various aspects of our own journey. It has reminded me of some of the emotions attached to different moments on the historical timeline.
I really believe that every single emotion imaginable has been not only experienced, but experienced in a volatile manner. It is amazing how quickly one can go from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows and back again.
I have said it literally hundreds of times now, but the truth is that this journey has been nothing like my expectations (which was molded by the corpus of books on the subject) and yet it has exceeded my expectation in a way that only God can orchestrate.
Given that I’m reflecting in a blog post rather than a multi-volume text, I want to draw my refections down to one of the amazing and central provisions that has been God’s hand of endurance on this journey.
Our story in regards to size has been one of early plodding and long plateaus that have transitioned into more dramatic growth in more recent times. It was more discouragement than encouragement that has come from reading and hearing the journeys of others. It seems as though we have broken all of the so called ‘rules’ of church planting health and growth.
God’s provision of encouragement to stay the course pursuing the vision that He gave for His church at Crossings Community has come from the people that He has gathered. Amidst all of the expectations, I could have never expected the way that He would encourage us through new, lasting, and real relationships.
The people that God has gathered to Crossings Community are AMAZING. I (and my family) have found such great encouragement and joy from this great church family. All of the quick conversations that happen in passing on a Sunday morning or the deep and intimate ones that happen over more intentional times all gather to create an overwhelming sense of strength and encouragement in the hands of this great God who set all of this in motion.
To those who read this who are with us at Crossings Community, thank you for being you and being a part of God’s movement. You might think this has nothing to do with you, but the truth is it has everything to do with you. God has used you as a great encouragement to me and our home and He has also used you immeasurably to all the new homes He is gathering to His Church.
